Harry Caray and Steve Stone, just like Ernie Banks and Ryne Sandberg,
are two names that are synonymous with the Chicago Cubs. Caray's
broadcasting career in Chicago came to a tragic, though seemingly
inevitable end with his heart attack in 1998. In contrast, Stone's
Chicago career ended needlessly as a result of petty differences between
the broadcaster and the Chicago Cubs organization. Stone has made it
clear that Chicago is his preferred city in which to work (view Steve's Resignation Letter), and we feel it
is most unfortunate that he was forced to resign from the position he
cherished and in which he was revered by millions of fans.
Speaking for
Cubs fans across the country, we feel that the experience of watching a
televised Cubs game is incomplete without Steve Stone's accurate,
entertaining, and insightful commentary. This petition has been created
with the hope that, with enough support, Steve Stone will be overwhelmed
by his fans' devotion and return to the position in which he belongs.
This website is not intended to disrespect Len Casper or Bob Brenley, the current WGN Cubs broadcasters. While they are capable announcers, neither possess the uncanny insight, prophetic
commentary, or affable nature of Steve Stone. Stoney is a
former player and a die-hard fan: a true
Chicago Cubs icon.
The Tribune Company needs to understand how precious he is to our great
city. Put last year's grudges behind us. BRING BACK STONEY!!!
